Srinagar, Oct 11 (PTI) The Jammu and Kashmir Police todayarrested three people on charges of spreading rumours aboutbraid-chopping incidents, including the death of a girl, invarious parts of the city, a police spokesman said.

The police arrested a man who had spread the rumour aboutthe death of a girl after braid-chopping incident inHabbakadal area of the city, he said.

The miscreant, identified as Abid Hussain Saudagar, wastraced and arrested from Arampora locality in Nawakadal area,the spokesman said.

He said the rumour had spread like a "wild fire" lastevening.

"Most of the people panicked and a sense of insecurityprevailed all over. People got emotional and started peltingstones at security forces establishments and vehicles," hesaid.

He said the police investigated the rumour and found itas "baseless".

"It was planned to generate the potential for civilunrest," the spokesman said.

In another case, the police arrested two people inconnection with rumour-mongering that led to the beating up ofa group of rag-pickers in Lasjan area of the city on October9.

"During the investigation, two rumour mongers -- TawseefAhmad Dar and Mir Musadiq -- have been arrested and furtherinvestigation in the case is underway," the spokesman said.
