Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Tuesday gave the go ahead for upgrading facilities of the SDAT-Nungambakkam Tennis Stadium to the tune of  `4.5 crore.

The refurbishment  includes a do-over of the playing surface, replacement of scoreboards and floodlights and upgrading broadcast facilities, besides general sprucing up of facilities and infrastructure, informed a press release. The venue of India’s premier ATP event, Chennai Open, was constructed for the Seventh South Asian Federation Games in 1995 during her first stint as the CM.

It’s likely that the work would begin only after the 2013-14 edition of the Chennai Open, slated later this year, and which would as usual be a marquee event featuring some of the higher-ranked players in the circuit.
