RIO DE JANEIRO: Former Uruguay captain Diego Lugano has joined Cerro Porteno from Sweden's BK Hacken, the Paraguayan club said.

No details were given of the deal but local media said the 34-year-old signed a one-year contract with the option of another year, reported Xinhua news agency.

"Thanks for the welcome. I hope to repay you on the pitch. My commitment is 100 percent," Lugano said in a statement on Cerro Porteno's official website.

Monday's announcement comes less than a week after Lugano parted ways with BK Hacken, having made just 11 appearances with the Gothenburg-based club.
