Mathews top scores as Sri Lanka makes 286-9 against England at the first ODI

NOTTINGHAM: Captain Angelo Mathews top-scored with 73 as Sri Lanka made 286-9 batting first in the opening one-day international against England on Tuesday.

Mathews was part of half-century partnerships with Dinesh Chandimal and Seekkuge Prasanna that saw the Sri Lankans to a reasonably competitive total at Trent Bridge after England put them in to bat.

Prasanna gave the Sri Lanka innings impetus with a quick-fire and boundary-filled 59 from 28 deliveries, hitting eight fours and four sixes.

Seamers Chris Woakes, David Willey and Liam Plunkett took two wickets each for England and, apart from Prasanna's blitz, Sri Lanka never really threatened to get away and post a big score.

The teams will contest a five-game series.
