JOHANNESBURG: Manchester United striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic has undergone a successful knee surgery and has already begun the rehabilitation process.

Ibrahimovic sustained the injury when he landed awkwardly after jumping for a header during the final seconds of United's 2-1 win over Anderlecht in the first leg of their Europa League clash at Old Trafford last month.

Following the final whistle, Ibrahimovic received lengthy treatment and subsequently limped off the pitch and down the Old Trafford tunnel to be replaced by Anthony Martial at the beginning of extra-time.

His agent Mino Raiola in a statement revealed about the surgery that the 35-year-old’s ACL problem was not a "career-ending injury."

"Zlatan Ibrahimovic has undergone successful knee surgery. He will make a full recovery and has not suffered a career-ending injury," Sport24 quoted the statement as saying.

The surgery was performed by Freddie Fu, M.D, and Volker Musahl, M.D, of the UPMC Sports Medicine program in Pittsburgh.

"Zlatan has started rehabilitation at UPMC and will remain under the care of Dr. Fu and Dr. Musahl throughout his recovery,” the statement from Raiola said.

"Zlatan and the medical team are not available for interviews at this time. Additional updates will follow at a later date,” the statement added.

Ibrahimovic, who joined United last summer from Paris Saint-Germain, has scored 28 goals in 46 appearances in his debut season.
