CHENNAI: Boxing in India has been moving forward again. With matters looking settled in the federation, there is optimism. In this general mood of positivity, Devendro Singh cuts a different figure.
Ever since suffering a shock defeat in the national championship final in Guwahati earlier this year, earning a spot in the national team has been a struggle for the 2012 Olympic quarterfinalist.
The biggest blow came when he was reduced to a reserve for the Asian Championships, an event where he had won silver in 2013. It was a double blow for the meet also served as qualifiers for World Championships.
Fate may have been tough on Devendro, but he has taken it in stride. Just a few days back, the Manipuri was recommended for the Arjuna award. Having missed out on it twice (nominated in 2015 & 2016), the 25-year-old is happy with the development.
“Every sportsperson aspires to get recognised for their efforts. So it’s a good feeling.”
At a tender age of 20, Devendro announced himself to the world by qualifying for the London Olympics, where he stunned 2008 Beijing silver medallist Purevdorjiin Serdamba in the 49kg category, before losing in the quarterfinals.
He soon cemented his name in the national team. But recurring injuries, a shift to 52kg and bad luck meant he couldn’t retain his place.
“I don’t contemplate on failures. My focus is on looking ahead with a positive attitude. When the next event comes, I want to ensure that I’m in shape and I can win gold,” he said.
The Indian Army employee said he would train at the Army Institue of Sports, Pune, from next week, around the time an eight-member Indian team leaves for Germany for the World Championships. Devendro is hopeful about the team and determined to earn another shot at glory. “All members of the selection committee are highly qualified. What they pick is in the best interest of the country. I just want to keep training hard and earn my chance in future.”
The flyweight boxer, who won silver in the Ulaanbaatar Cup (Mongolia) in June, is happy to be back in the competitive atmosphere.
“We have seen plenty of positive changes. All the boxers are highly motivated. Everyone is getting a fair chance to showcase their skills. We have had international tournaments recently and everyone got a chance to travel and gain experience. Not just No 1, Nos 2, 3 and 4 were also part of it.”
With a positive attitude and certified talent, it won’t be a surprise if Devendro fights back to become No 1 again.
