KURNOOL: The Kurnool Parliamentary constituency was represented by several bigwigs but the problems in the district still remain unresolved. Leaders make promises and conveniently forget them after becoming the MPs turning people’s hopes into a mirage. However, the people wish that their demands will be addressed at least this time.Kurnool, which has been the first capital of the State, has two Parliamentary constituencies.

The Kurnool Parliamentary constituency, which used to have six Assembly segments in its purview, has seven segments now after the Delimitation.

The Alur segment, which has been reserved for the SCs earlier, has now been become a general seat. Candidates who won from Kodumur, Dhone and Yemmiganur Assembly segments have become chief ministers.

Kotla Vijayabhaskara Reddy had become the chief minister after winning from Dhone while Damodaram Sanjeevaiah had ruled the State contesting from Kodumur. People winning from the constituency also played a key role in national politics.

BV Mohan Reddy, who won five times successively as MLA from Yemmiganur, also secured the ministerial berths every time.

Kotla Vijayabhaskara Reddy also represented the Lok Sabha constituency six times. Many senior and influential leaders in the Congress, TDP, CPM and CPI belonged to this constituency but the desires of the people still remain unfulfilled due to their negligence.

Of the 15 times elections held for the constituency, Congress won 12 times, TDP twice and an independent once.

In 2004, Congress candidate Kotla Surya Prakash Reddy won as the MP securing 4,33,529. TDP’s K E Krishna Murthy secured 3,32,431 votes while BSP’s Reddypogu David got 12,515 votes.

Independents Dr Parameswar Reddy got 3,722 votes, James 17,410, T Seshaphani 8,899 votes, P Ravindra Rao 2,723, RV Mohan Reddy 2,627 and K V Krishna Kumar 2,083 votes.
