ELURU: District judge and in-charge of the First Additional District Court Baktavatsalam today granted conditional bail to Kovvur MLA TV Rama Rao, who is facing charges of rape of a nursing student.

Defence lawyers D Prabhakar and E Srinivasa Rao moved the bail petition of Rama Rao in the First Additional District Judge Court here.

The judge directed Rama Rao to report at Nidadavole police station every day between 5 and 6 p.m. He, however, need not report at the police station whenever he attended the Assembly session, the judge said. Two persons gave surety for Rs 10,000 each for Rama Rao.

Earlier, Second Additional Judicial First Class Magistrate V Krishna Murthy extended the judicial remand of Rama Rao till August 17.

The judge conducted the hearing on Rama Rao’s bail plea through video linkage from the court here to the Central Jail, Rajahmundy, where Rama Rao was lodged.

It may be mentioned that Rama Rao was brought from the Guntur Government General Hospital in an ambulance and lodged in Rajahmundry Central Jail on July 20.

When he complained of chest pain he was taken to Kakinada Government hospital the next day and again brought back to the Central Jail as the court remanded him till August 3.

It is learnt that the officials preferred to conduct the hearing on the bail plea through video linkage due to escort problems.
