TIRUPATI: A fisherman chanced upon ancient coins weighing nearly 3.5 kg while fishing in Swarnamukhi river near Srikalahastheeswara temple in Srikalahasthi today.

The coins belonged to the Victorian era.

The fisherman tried to sell away the coins in a scrap shop thinking that they were made of bronze.

But one person in the shop informed the revenue officials, who in turn seized the coins.

When contacted Srikalahasti tahsildar Rajasekhar said the coins weighed nearly 3.5 kg and resembled 25- paise coins.
