MLA gets 1 year jail for Dharna

Gudivada MLA Kodali Srivenkateswara Rao alias Nani and seven others were convicted and sentenced to one year rigorous imprisonment by the judicial first class magistrate, Kaikaluru, on Monday. The judge was dealing with a case registered against the MLA and eight others for staging a dharna in front of the tahasildar office at Mudinepally with the body of a farmer in 2005.

The judge further directed Nani to pay a fine of Rs 2,000 or in default undergo two months simple imprisonment. He and seven others were convicted under section 353 of IPC (assault or criminal force to deter a public servant from discharge of his duty) and section 426 of IPC (committing mischief).

According to Gudivada DSP P Parameshawar Reddy, Nani and eight others staged a dharna in front of the tahasildar office on August 23 in 2005 with the body of Katur Moshe, a farmer of Pedapalaparru who committed suicide by hanging due to a land dispute.
