Floods subside, many villages still cut off

Though rains have subsided and flood waters of Godavari river are receding, several villages in Adilabad, Khammam, East Godavari and West Godavari districts still remain cut off.

As many as 250 villages in Bhadrachalam and Paloncha revenue divisions of Khammam district still remain waterlogged. However, another 42 villages in those divisions are limping back to normalcy, with water receding.

Penganga river in Adilabad district continued to flow at danger level near Sirpur mandal. Road connectivity between Adilabad district and Maharasthra still remains cut off with flood water flowing about six feet over the low-level bridge at the border. As many as 42 villages in Koutalla and Bejur are still inaccessible.

In West Godavari district, several villages in the Agency area, lanka (island) villages and Gopada Kshetram in Kovvur are still marooned. As many as 100 villages in East Godavari district remain flooded.

Though the water level in Godavari river at Bhadrachalam is receding, it was still 54 feet at 8 pm on Sunday (53 feet is the third level warning point). Officials are expecting the level drop further as inflows from Sabari, Taliperu, Indravati and other tributaries of Godavari decreased with rains subsiding in the catchments areas.

At Cotton Barrage at Dowlewswaram, the water level was at 16.2 feet and the discharge rate in the evening was 16 lakh cusecs. Officials said flood waters might recede by night, with no heavy inflows into the river upstream.

In Karimnagar, flood-affected areas are limping back to normalcy. Choppers pressed into service for air-dropping of food packets and relief material flew back to Hyderabad. Minister for civil supplies D Sridhar Babu took stock of the situation in affected areas. Bathing ghats at Kaleshwaram and Pranahita have resurfaced with flood water in Godavari river receding. In Khammam district, Union minister P Balaram Naik, state minister Ramreddy Venkata Reddy, along with Bhadrachalam MLA K Satyawati, conducted an aerial survey of the flood-affected areas.

Special officers deputed by the state government visited the flooded areas in different districts on Sunday to monitor relief and rehabilitation efforts. Respective district administrations are assessing the damage and coordinating the return of people from relief camps to their respective villages.
