Guntur District Admn to Go Ahead with ePOS in PDS

Express News Service

GUNTUR: Notwithstanding the strike notices served by the fair price shop dealers seeking a hike in commission and expressing doubts over the effectiveness of the ePOS systems introduced in public distribution system (PDS), the district administration has decided to implement digitisation of PDS.

The entire PDS, right from procurement, storage and distribution is being digitised in a phased manner and, as part of it, ration of essential commodities to the ration card holders is being distributed after validating their identity using biometric devices.

The ePOS is a biometric device, which is attached to digital weighing scales. When a beneficiary gives his thumb impression on the biometric device, it verifies and provides the data pertaining to how much ration the beneficiary is eligible for. Once rice or other essential commodities are weighed, the data is automatically fed into the device, which is attached to the weighing scale.
