VISAKHAPATNAM: Deemed university status is not an ornament but a tool for higher educational institutions to facilitate timely ugradation of their syllabus and skills, observed GITAM University president MVVS Murthi. He emphasised the need for quality teaching facilities including faculty to produce quality doctors.
Addressing the first batch of MBBS students at the newly established GITAM Institute of Medical Science and Research (GIMSR) here Monday, Murthi mentioned that GITAM would promote quality medical education and was offering MBBS programme with 50 per cent subsidised fee structure. Citing a cover story published in the Edex supplement of ‘The New Indian Express’ on lack of quality teachers in the medical field, he stated that the University gives high priority to teaching and appointed 100 teachers for 150 MBBS students who joined the first year of MBBS. He said that GITAM University is no more restricted to Visakhapatnam but has become a national institution through its accomplishments. GIMSR director CV Rao said that the MBBS curriculum was designed with latest subjects and innovative teaching methods. He mentioned that GITAM Medical College is supporting the GIMSR with its 360 bedded hospital along with 20 operation theaters, a 30 bedded Intensive Care Unit and well equipped blood bank. We give equal priority to communication and soft skill development among the students, he said.
As part of the beginning of new academic year at GIMSR, the University distributed tablet PCs to all students to interact with faculty during their classes. A total of 150 newly admitted students participated in the function along with their family.
