Parimala - The Flower Show, a Huge Crowd Puller

VISAKHAPATNAM:  It was a visual treat for the visitors at the Parimala, the flower show, organised by Visakhapatnam Urban Development Authority at the MGM VUDA Park in the city on Friday. The visitors would feel the freshness of  blooming flowers in various hues and fragrance.

Rows of 140 varieties of flower arrangements of Heloconia, Baby Carnations, Gladiolus, Andhuria, Tiger Orchids, Orchids, Chamanthi (Chrysanthemum), Jabras, Asiatic Lilies and Oriental Lilies gave an ethereal look to the flower show.

Special arrangement marked 25 varieties of dry flowers including bamboo, wood roses, white lady sticks, curly sticks, Cedar rose, palm leaves, Cycas palm leaves, gold and silver Mothi hangings and pine cones.

A peacock made of red, yellow and green capsicums, beautiful Cinderella dolls dotted with white and yellow flowers and swans made of white flowers were the biggest attraction at the show. Also a section of the show has vegetable carvings of animals and birds.

Bonsai Show

The mini green city with more than 60 varieties of exotic plants of 150 Bonsai trees was set up by 25 members of the Visakha Bonsai Welfare Society.

Collections include dwarfed varieties of Ficus family, citrus, banyan, bougainvillea, Benjamin, sapota, pomegranate, Medi, Hispida, Yucca, Jade, Bucida Spinosa, Brazillian Rain Tree, Areillia, Zinsung, Blue Braya, Tiphasia Trifolia,  Portucula Alfra and Penjing organised in island shape.

A few plants were showcased with curving trunk, cascading style with tree drooping down and the tree clings to a rock creating an image of island or a mountain. The selection of plants was also done carefully to ensure that only the rare and best ones are displayed.

As a hobby and nature-lover, B Sobha, a member of Visakha Bonsai Welfare Society, exhibited a part of her green cover of bonsai plants at the flower show. She has been nurturing 300 bonsai plants at her terrace garden for the last 10 years. 

“Thirty-two year-old Ficus Ramphin (Bodhi plant) and 30-year-old Pine tree are the oldest plants of mine exhibited in the show,” said Sobha.

“While growing a bonsai, care and attention should be put into the style of

growing, pruning of leaves and the supply of required nutrients,” said Janab Syed Ali, another member of the society.

“This time the tray landscape bonsai will surely attract the visitors,” he added.

“Women, being specialists in growing a huge number of Bonsai plants in their home, especially against the backdrop of shrinking urban space, propagates terrace gardens and Bonsai culture across the city,” said Rama Devi, a Bonsai lover.

The three-day event, as a part of Visakha Utsav, was inaugurated by HRD Minister Ganta Srinivasa Rao and is open till January 3 from 10 am to 10 pm.
