VIJAYAWADA: Income Tax department has issued more than 200 notices to the parents of students from Vijayawada who got admission in B category medical seats (management) in Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. The students were mainly from Vijayawada, Guntur and Prakasam districts. Their income is suspected to be more than Rs.10 lakh per month which attracts an income tax demand of 30 percent.

The IT officials confirmed issuing notices but would not reveal any details. “We have sent notices basing on information we have that some of them are filing tax returns which do not reflect their income properly. They have to substantiate their claims in their tax returns before September 30. After that, the department will act in accordance with law,” commissioner of Income Tax Sunil Kumar Ojha, said.

“We have no objection if the parents send their children to private medical colleges. What we are concerned is whether they have paid the Income Tax on the money they have earned. They would have to substantiate their claims that the income shown in the returns is true. There will, however, be no force, pressure or harassment from Income tax department but they will have to pay up if they have evaded paying tax,” Ojha added.

However, parents claim that they have not evaded paying tax. Some of them said they have not yet received notices and that they would respond if and when they receive them.

“We have not received any notice as such from Income tax department. We pay tax returns regularly and on time. We are not worried about the notices,” GS Rajababu, a parent.
