Rivulets flow menacingly in Polavaram, Velairpadu of West Godavari

19 tribal villages cut off from the rest of West Godavari district

ELURU: Following heavy rains in upstream areas, the rivulets in Polavaram and Velairpadu mandals of West Godavari district are flowing menacingly. Polavaram mandal received the highest rainfall of 77.8 mm.The Mandal received incessant rain throughout the night.

The rain halted only on Tuesday morning. Isuka Kalva which is in spate has breached at Kotha Ramaiahpeta, inundating fields. 

Sand dunes have formed in agricultural fields due to the flood water. Several small and marginal farmers have been hit as they have to incur a huge expenditure to reclaim their lands after removing the sand dunes.

Kondavagu is overflowing on Kothuru causeway in Polavaram Mandal. As a result, 19 tribal villages have been cut off from the rest of the district. 


Tribals are facing severe hardships. Polavaram Mandal tahsildar M Mukkanti inspected the Isuka Kalva breach at Kotha Ramaiahpeta. The Irrigation Department started works to plug the breach of rivulet in the afternoon. The tahsildar said a report would be sent to the District Collector soon about the damage caused by the overflowing rivulets to crops and agricultural fields in the mandal.


As the Peddavagu project in Aswaraopeta Mandal of Telangana received heavy inflows, the irrigation officials opened gates and released about 3,000 cusecs of water downstream. As a result, the road connectivity between Kammaragudem and Medepalli in Velairpadu mandal was cut off. Many villages in Velairpadu mandal are likely to be affected if more water is released downstream from the project.

Rajamahendravaram: Heavy rain lashed Rajamahendravaram division on Tuesday. According to officials, Alamuru recorded 23.8 mm rainfall, Kadiyam 49.2 mm, Rajamahendravaram rural 35.6 mm, Rajamahendravaram urban 31.4 mm, Sitanagaram 27 mm, Korukonda 12.4 mm, Gokavaram 14.8 mm and Rajanagaram 53.2 mm. The heavy rain disrupted normal life at several places. Many low-lying areas were inundated.
