VISHAKAPATNAM: An 11-year-old-minor girl belonging to the Dalit community was on Wednesday night allegedly raped by an auto-rickshaw driver in Gangavaram here.

However, the incident came to light on Friday after her parents lodged a complaint at New Port police station.

The accused, identified as Ganesh (29), is a native of Chodavaram who currently resides at Gajuwaka. He is on the run.

According to New Port police station inspector Nageswara Rao, the victim is a student of class five. Ganesh drives his auto in her locality.

"Finding the girl alone, Ganesh entered her house on the night of June 14. Having threatened the victim, the driver took her to an isolated area on Gangavaram Road and raped her. He dropped her near her house late at night," Rao said, quoting the police complaint.

After reaching home, the girl narrated the entire episode to her parents who had by then begun to search for her. They lodged a police complaint the next day.

Police have registered a case of rape under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989.

Efforts are on to track and nab Ganesh.
