VISAKHAPATNAM: Even as issues pertaining to women’s safety rocked the Assembly session in Amaravati on Tuesday, the police records present a grim picture of Vizag city when it comes to crimes against the fairer sex.

In the Port City, one girl or woman goes missing every day. At least four women get abducted a month here. Further, there has been no trace of the 142 women and girls who have been missing since 2015 and 52 kidnap cases are still under investigation.

In January and February this year, 64 missing cases were registered in city police stations, which means one case was reported per day. Of those, 33 cases are still under investigation, suggest police records.

The spurt in such cases is not the latest development, if the numbers suggested by Central Crime Records Bureau, Vizag, are any indication.

Though several trafficking cases were reported, police say that the percentage is very low.  “Most of the missing cases have elopement and family issues. Having eloped, many girls change their phone numbers, thus remain untraced. Further, many parents do not inform police if their girls return home. Many cases, awaiting their final reports, are closed as per procedure,” says a senior police officer.

As if it is not enough, 78 rape cases and 410 cases of womens’ harassment were registered last year.
