VIJAYAWADA: The State Legislature on Monday adopted a resolution urging the Union government to intervene and approach the Supreme Court to protect the future of the 2015-16 batch MBBS students of the Fathima Institute of Medical Sciences (FIMS) whose admission was cancelled by the Medical Council of India (MCI). The institute had admitted the students without the MCI’s permission.

Moving the resolution in the Assembly, Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu assured the members and the students that the State government was doing everything in its capacity to resolve the issue and asserted that the resolution would be forwarded to the Centre to push it to move the apex court.
“If the court gives permission soon, the students, who are qualified in NEET, will get a confirmed seat in FIMS or any other medical college. Students, who did not qualify, will be sent to NEET coaching classes, and the government will bear the cost,” he said.

Earlier, the students met Naidu at the Assembly, where he told them to form a committee to coordinate with a special cell dedicated to solve the issue. Advising patience, he expressed his displeasure with the students for holding protests and blaming the government. Terming the issue complicated, he is learnt to have pointed out, “Management of FIMS committed the first mistake. The second mistake was committed by you by joining the college without verifying its credentials.”
