GUNTUR: It was found that many orphans who were adopted unlawfully were being made to work and, sometimes, also sold, said H Arun Kumar, Commissioner of the Women and Child Welfare Department. As a measure to put an end to this, the department has initiated an awareness programme on adoption policies across the state to provide the adopted kids with better lives.

At the programme organised here on Saturday, Arun Kumar said the move was to encourage legal approach to adopting children and avoid some issues arising in future. He said the department was closely monitoring the adoption programmes and urged parents, willing to adopt a child below 18 years, to follow every guideline as per the official adoption policy.

Before adoption, the department conducts an inquiry about the family’s financial status among other details. The department will also closely monitor the adopted kid to ensure that he/she has a healthy and good life, he said. He urged the interested persons to visit website www.cara.nic.in to get more details about the adoption policy, and they could even register themselves.

Guntur Joint Collector-2 L Vijaya Chandar, Regional Director (Women & Child Welfare Department) K Sarada, Project Director K Praveena, Child Welfare Commission member Padmalatha and others participated.
