RAJAMAHENDRAVARAM: Only if there was a bridge connecting Pasuvala Lanka to the mainland, the victims would not have been forced to commute on the boat to reach their school. This was the most heard comment after the country boat, carrying 40 people, capsized in River Godavari at Pasuvula Lanka on Saturday.

In fact, the boat drowned when it hit one of the concrete pillars of the bridge which is under construction. The bridge, when completed, would connect Pasuvula Lanka to Saladivaripalem Lanka in I Polavaram mandal. Every day, around 300-400 use boats to commute between the two places.

Construction works of the bridge only started four months ago and it is expected to take another nine months to one year to complete. According to officials, the bridge, which will be 1.3 km long, was sanctioned under Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana in 2008 and `20 crore was sanctioned for it.
