VIJAYAWADA: The HC has expressed strong displeasure over the cancellation of social welfare pensions allegedly based on the recommendation of TDP MLA Bendalam Ashok Kumar.
The HC directed concerned officials to restore pensions to five beneficiaries, including two widows, a differently-abled person, and two single women from Srikakulam district.
Justice Satti Subba Reddy observed that pensions are not charity distributed by the government but a security right intended to ensure a dignified life for vulnerable sections.
The court criticised officials for allegedly cancelling pensions without following due process and questioned how action was taken on a complaint filed by an illiterate village sarpanch capable only of affixing a thumb impression.
It noted that notices were issued even before the alleged complaint was filed, raising doubts over the fairness of the process. Officials denied acting on an MLA’s recommendation despite records suggesting otherwise. The court criticised authorities for filing a false affidavit and failing to submit the Tahsildar’s report. It directed officials to clear pending pension arrears within 12 weeks.
