NEW DELHI: A 17-year-old girl allegedly committed suicide inside a police station in west Delhi's Tilak Vihar area on Sunday. The girl's family had approached the police late on Saturday night that their daughter was missing from home along with a 21-year-old boy from the locality.

A vigilance enquiry has ordered to investigate the lapses of the police in the case.

According to the police, the gilr's family went to their neighbour's house when the minor could not be found around 10.30 pm.

"A scuffle broke out between the two families and a family member from the girl's side received minor injuries. Both the families called up the police station around 10.50 pm. The two families are immediate neighbours," said DCP (West) Vijay Kumar. Following this, the two families came to the police station.

"There was a commotion at the police station as both the families turned up with a number of relatives," he added. According to police, the girl turned up at the police station around 2.30 am and told the police she would not go home. The police was making arrangements to send the girl to nari niketan.

"There was mayhem at the police station with more family members from both sides turning up. The girl came and told us that she was at a gurudwara and it was later learnt that the boy was at his relative's place. We have the girl's statement that she did not want to go back home and stay with her family so the police were making arrangements to send her to nari niketan and also trying to pacify the family members," said Kumar.

The girl allegedly locked herself in a police room and committed suicide during the commotion. The police claimed the girl was assigned a lady constable. The judicial inquiry will investigate the police's lapses in the case. The girl's family had claimed the boy's family had tried to kidnap her for marriage. Police, however, denied this.
