NEW DELHI: A 17-year-old girl allegedly committed suicide inside a police station in west Delhi’s Tilak Vihar area on Sunday. A vigilance enquiry has been ordered to probe the lapses at the police station.
The girl’s family had approached the police late on Saturday night saying that their daughter was missing from home and they suspected that she had gone with a 21-year-old boy from their neighbourhood.
The girl’s family had gone searching for her at the neighbour’s house at around 10.30 pm. “A scuffle broke out between the two families and a family member from the girl’s side received minor injuries. Both the families reached the police station around 10.50 pm,” said DCP (West) Vijay Kumar.
“There was a commotion at the police station as both the families turned up with a number of relatives,” he added.
The girl’s family accused the boy’s family of trying to abduct their daughter and getting her married to their son. Police however denied this.
According to police, the girl turned up at the police station around 2.30 am and told them that she had gone to a gurudwara. She refused to go home and asked police to send her to a Nari Niketan.
“There was mayhem at the police station with more family members from both sides turning up. The situation turned volatile and policemen on duty were trying their best to pacify the families,” said Kumar.
In the melee, the girl allegedly locked herself in a room at the police station and committed suicide.
The police claimed that the girl was assigned a lady constable, but she managed to give her the slip.
