NEW DELHI: The capital recorded a maximum temperature of 36.8 degrees Celsius on Thursday, 2.8 notches above the seasonal average, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The minimum temperature in the city settled at 18.9 degrees Celsius.

Despite the rising mercury, the IMD has forecast thunderstorms accompanied by rain, lightning and gusty winds between April 3 and April 5. Rain activity is likely to begin on Friday night and continue intermittently over the next two days. However, officials said the showers are unlikely to bring any significant relief from the prevailing warm conditions.

The weather department noted that while light to moderate rainfall is expected, temperatures will remain relatively high, with no sharp drop anticipated. The city is likely to continue experiencing warm and slightly humid conditions despite the intermittent spells of rain. Similar weather patterns, including thunderstorms and light showers, are expected to persist into the coming week.

Meanwhile, Delhi’s air quality remained in the ‘moderate’ category on Thursday. The AQI stood at 189 at 7 pm, compared to 167 at 9 am, as per data from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). According to CPCB standards, an AQI between 101 and 200 is categorised as ‘moderate’, indicating acceptable air quality but with potential health concerns for sensitive groups. An AQI of 0–50 is considered ‘good’, 51–100 ‘satisfactory’, 201–300 ‘poor’, 301–400 ‘very poor’, and 401–500 ‘severe’. Authorities have advised residents to stay cautious during thunderstorms and remain updated with weather advisories.
