CHAMRAJNAGAR: Union Minister of State for Railways R Velu inaugurated the newly-converted broad gauge section from Nanjangud town to Chamrajnagar, here on Tuesday.
Nearly Rs 197 crore was spent on this work.
The town wore a festive look as thousands of people gathered to witness the inauguration of the renovated railway station and the train services.
The Mysore-Chamrajnagar line was laid by the erstwhile Maharajas in 1926, to facilitate the royal family members and devotees to visit the Chamarajeshwara temple in Chamrajnagar.
Speaking on the occasion, Railway Minister Velu said that the Indian Railways, with a surplus of Rs 25,000 crore, had sanctioned Rs 860 crore to upgrade basic infrastructure including waiting halls, drinking water, shelter and other facilities at railway stations. “The work on Badami- Gadag, Bellary-Hospet, Hubli- Solapur, Bangalore-Tumkur gauge conversion and doubling of broad gauge are almost completed and will be commissioned soon,’’ he added.
