BANGALORE: The government proposes to increase the prize amount of TSR Award, given for excellence in journalism, to Rs 2 lakh from the present Rs 1 lakh.

Home Minister Dr V S Acharya made the announcement while participating in the ‘Amrita Mahotsava’ celebrations of the Karnataka Union of Working Journalists (KUWJ) on Wednesday.

Speaking on the occasion, Acharya said the fourth estate played a crucial role in upholding the values and dignity of democracy.

He also called upon the media to pay greater attention for development works and the well-being of poor and downtrodden. Acharya, who represented the chief minister at the function, promised to release advertisements to district-level newspapers through the information department.

Minister for Information, IT & BT Katta Subramanya Naidu announced that the government was committed to setting up a Media University.
