MANGALORE: The Justice Somashekar Commission completed its inquiry into church attacks in Dakshina Kannada and other districts on Monday.

According to a copy of the notification, the Commission did not reveal the date when it would submit the final report to the state government.

Retired judge Justice BK Somashekar was appointed to head a oneman commission of inquiry into the attacks on churches in September 2008.

The Somashekar Commission initially began functioning from Bangalore and held a special judicial inquiry sittings in Mangalore, Udupi and Davangere. During the course of inquiry, the Commission received 1,019 petitions and 754 witnesses were examined during a period of 300 days of judicial sittings.

Thirtyfour advocates, representing different sections, including the government, submitted their cases before the commission and the final arguments were heard over a period of 53 sittings. As many as 2,437 documents were marked by the commission as exhibits, in addition to 34 material objects in the form of electronic storage documents.

Justice Somashekar's interim report submitted to Home Secretary Abhijith Dasgupta on February 1, 2010, had provided ample fodder for the opposition to train their guns on the government.
