KARWAR: INS Tabar and INS Trishul, two frontline combat ships, are on display during the Navy Week celebrations.
Captain B Dasgupta, commanding officer of INS Tabar, told reporters during their visit to the ship on Wednesday that the display was aimed at holding regular interaction with the coastal states and public and to encourage youths to join the Navy.
Dasgupta and Captain SJ Singh, commanding officer of INS Trishul, said that both the ships belong to Talwar class of frigates, built in Russia. They are used for air, surface and underwater warfare.
The formidable arsenal of these ships comprise vertical launch long range surface to surface missiles, long range anti-ship and anti submarine torpedoes and 100 mm calibre gun for offshore and onshore targets. Further, they have portable surface to air missile system, SHITL area defence SAM system to use information collected by 3D radar system, a 12 barrel anti-submarine rocket launcher, besides two versatile missile-artillery composite complexes.
They have enhanced sensor and weapon capabilities. They protect the maritime assets of the country and carry out anti-piracy operations.
A visit to these ships takes one to a different world. The men in white welcoming people with smiles and hospitality, sailors holding guns and keeping an all-around watch, armaments installed and the deafening sound of the ship engines echoing round the clock and the vast Arabian sea, all make for a unique experience.
