BANGALORE: Former Karnataka deputy chief minister M P Prakash, 71, died on Wednesday morning at a private hospital after suffering from prolonged illness.
Prakash was suffering from intestinal cancer for the past two-and-half years. He was admitted to hospital three days ago with liver infection.
On Tuesday evening, he was shifted to the intensive care unit after which he developed breathlessness and symptoms of pneumonia. He breathed his last in the early hours of Wednesday.
Prakash's body was kept at Freedom Park where thousands of people paid last respect to the departed leader. The body will be taken to Hoovinahadagali where the burial will take place on Thursday afternoon.
Besides being an active politician and a prominent face in state politics since 1980, Prakash had keen interest in arts, particularly theatre and music.
Being an avid reader, Prakash had penned five books, directed several dramas besides acting in them. He has acted in films like 'Avashte', a political satire, 'Kadina Benki' and 'Simhasana'.
Born on July 11, 1940, in a village near Hagari Bommanahalli in Bellary district, Prakash entered politics in early 1980 and went on to become a fourtime MLA, besides being an MLC for one term. He was also the president of the state Janata Party and the Janata Dal.
Forced by political compulsions, Prakash joined the Congress three years ago. But he could not actively involve with the Congress as he was diagnosed with cancer and since then he remained detached from politics.
He is survived by his wife, son and three daughters. Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa mourned his death and offered condolences.
The state government has announced holiday for all schools and colleges in Bellary district on Thursday.
