MYSORE: The inaugural of the nine-day Bahuroopi National Theatre Festival in Mysore on Saturday resounded with opposition to the Made Made Snana ritual being practised at Kukke Subramanya temple.

While Medical Education Minister S A Ramdas minced no words in describing it as a “social evil that should be banned”, noted litterateur D Javare Gowda, who inaugurated the festival, urged Ramdas to keep his word.

“The repertory Rangayana should address social evils such as this and the Devadasi system prevailing in the Karnataka-Maharashtra border region,” he said.

A film festival, book and handicraft expo and street plays too were organised on the occasion. Film director Lingadevaru, actress Rajeshwari Varma, Nataka Academy chairperson Malati Sudhir were also present.
