Malay bodies flayed

MANGALORE: Former deputy Prime Minister of Malaysia and opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim accused corrupt agencies in Malaysia of being behind the various missing cases of migrants from India. Anwar Ibrahim, who was in Mangalore to participate in a private programme on Thursday, told media the Malaysian government policies entailed severe punishment to illegal migrants.

He suspected a link between these punishment and reports about thousands of illegal migrants vanishing without a trace. If the corrupt agencies were punished, the “instances” of disappearance of illegal migrants also would stop, he said. “In corruption, Malaysia is similar to India,” he said, adding that media in his country was voiceless as it was barred from writing against the government.

Ibrahim, who was acquitted of charges of corruption and sodomy recently, said a political conspiracy resulted in allegations targeting him. Even the media highlighted charges against him, he said, and added it had not highlighted his acquittal.
