BANGALORE: The BJP has urged the Centre to roll back the excise duty and sales tax increase as proposed in the general budget and also the proposed hike in railway fares and freight charges.

BJP general secretary H N Ananth Kumar said here on Friday that the BJP would take all necessary steps both inside and outside the Parliament to protect the interests of the common man. The hike in excise duty and service tax and increase in rail fares will put a burden of Rs 76,000 crore which will have to be borne by the common man, he said.

“This is a “do-nothing-for-the-country” budget with no bold steps to control inflation, boost growth by encouraging consumption, individual savings and incentivised investments.” He termed the increase in the income tax exemption limit as a cruel joke.
