Budget session to face turbulence

From our online archive

BANGALORE: Amid the uncertainty prevailing in the BJP, the 11-day Budget session of the state Legislature will begin here from Tuesday.

The session is likely to be a stormy one given the open revolt of over 60 BJP legislators — who are lodged at a posh resort on the outskirts of Bangalore since Sunday night — against CM D V Sadananda Gowda, and demanding the party national leadership to convene a meet and elect a new leader.

The opening day of the session is likely to be adjourned after paying tribute to former higher education minister Dr V S Acharya and others who passed away recently. Gowda, who also holds the finance portfolio, is scheduled to present his maiden budget the next day. He will move the Finance Bill immediately after presenting the budget.  Assembly Speaker K G Bopaiah addressing newsmen here informed that there will be no Question Hour for the first two days of the session.

Meanwhile, the Opposition is likely to put the Treasury Benches on the defensive on the issue of internal bickering within the BJP.
