4 killed as car hits speeding lorry

Four people were killed after their car was hit by a speeding truck in Thenka Yermal near Padubidri on NH 66 on Monday evening.

The deceased, including two women, travelling in a Tata Sumo have been identified as Sajji (43), Vijayan (52), Shanta (45) and Jayanth (44), the police said.

Sources in Padubidri police station said that they were among the nine people returning to homes in Ernakulam in Kerala after visiting Mookambika temple in Kollur.

Eyewitnesses told police that the accident took place at around 8.30 pm. While Sajji was declared brought dead to the Padubidri government hospital, three others breathed their last while being shifted to KMC hospital in Manipal.

All the five injured including three children were shifted to private hospitals in Manipal and Mangalore.

The injured passengers were identified as Babu (45), Nandu (11), Lalita (40), Arenina (14) and Kannan (12).

The driver of truck fled after the accident, the police stated. A case has been registered in Padubidri police station in this regard.
