Garbage mounds lie uncleared in city

Express News Service

Heaps of garbage are still lying in several parts of the city despite tall claims made by Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) to make Bangalore free of garbage soon.

As on Wednesday, 5,000 tonnes of garbage generated in the last two days lay uncleared. The problem aggravated after Mandur residents opposed garbage dumping in the landfill near their village recently. This had resulted in accumulation of around 16,000 tonnes of garbage across the city.

Understanding the gravity of the situation, the Palike cancelled leaves of all its staff and put 22,000 pourakarmikas and around 2,500 officers from Health and Engineering Departments to monitor the situation.

However, JD(S) leader in BBMP council Thimme Gowda told Express that the Palike had cleared only 50 per cent of the garbage in Kalasipalaya and in Goripalaya, where waste is generated in huge quantities.

Opposition Congress leader M Gunashekar said heaps of garbage were still lying uncleared in Benson Town, Harris Road, Tannery Road and the surrounding areas.

Similarly, BBMP could clear only 50 per cent of garbage in DJ Halli and around 25 per cent in Kushalnagar on Wednesday. It has not cleared garbage in places like Thimmaya Road, Shivajinagar and Vasant Nagar.

The situation is still grim in areas in Bangalore South like Hanumantha Nagar, Basavanagudi, Gandhi Bazaar, Chikkalsandra, Banashankari, Bismillah Nagar, Chamarajpet, Tilak Nagar, Siddapura, Nagaratpet, Akkipet, Avenue Road, Balepet and Gurappanapallya.

Residents of Tanny Road, DJ Halli, Modi Garden, Nagawara, Kadugondanahalli, S K Garden, Sagayapuram, Pulakeshi Nagar, Ramaswamy Pallya, Ulsoor and surrounding areas complained of non-clearance of garbage by the Palike.

Meanwhile, Mayor D Venkatesh Murthy said on Wednesday that nearly 3.5 metric tonnes of garbage was cleared from eight BBMP zones. And after talks with villagers of Mandur, the BBMP had sent 1,000 trucks to the landfill so far.

Cemetery not spared

Some residents complained of garbage dumping near Audugodi Christian Cemetery. They said some persons were coming in goods autorickshaws and tractors and dumping garbage near the cemetery.
