Mysore will long remember Arjuna's majestic walk

Yathiraju

Arjuna proved sceptics wrong by carrying the 750 kg golden howdah with deity Chamundeshwari from the palace to Bannimantap on Wednesday evening without a hitch.

Arjuna was not once got provoked during the procession and carried out his task with dignity. He carried the howdah for the second time after a gap of six years. The 2.80 metre tall Arjuna, weighing 5,520 kg, did not seem tired at all. Mahout Masti and his son Sannappa, a Kavadi, took him to the Bannimantapa where the procession culminated.

Decorated with ear rings, anklets and ankle chain, Arjuna began his royal walk from the palace around 4.10 pm with kumki elephants Chaitra and Kanthi on both sides. Arjuna accomplished his task in the midst of performances by more than hundred folk troupes. Seeing Arjuna walk sedately with the howdah, the crowds at various circles whistled and shouted in joy. They folded their hands before Arjuna in respect.

Arjuna also cooperated with the forest department while tying the heavy howdah on its back.   Project Elephant Director Ajay Mishra said that Arjuna was actually much younger than 52 years, hence he moves faster than 54-year-old Balarama. Mahout Masti said that Arjuna was well-tamed and obeyed his commands.

Jumbo Impresses All

Thirteen years ago, Arjuna accidentally killed a mahout. In-charge of Dasara elephants veterinary doctor Nagaraju  told Express, “Arjuna’s gigantic personality and its relatively flat back was helpful to place houdah. With this Arjuna cemented its position.”
