Rain batters Chitradurga, Davangere

Turuvanur in Chitradurga received the maximum pre-monsoon showers in the district on Monday night. It recorded 93.4 mm of rainfall, a press release from the Deputy Commissioner’s Office stated on Tuesday.

It also said that Chitradurga city recorded a rainfall of 76.8 mm whereas the Chitradurga Rural received 75.1 mm of rain.

Apart from this, Challakere received 45.4 mm, Parashuramapura 26.5, Nayakanahatti 7.6, Devara Marikunte 22.4, Talaku 11.4, Hireguntanuru 79.2, Ayanahalli 71.4, Bharamasagara 60.2, Sirigere 88.8, Hiriyur 10, Babbur 8.6, Eshwaragere 10.6, Ikkanuru 10.5, Sooguru 6.3, Javanagondanahalli 15, Holalkere 44, Ramagiri 76, Chikkajajuru 75.5, B Durga 68, HD Pura 69, Talya 40, Hosadurga 20.4, Baguru 12.4, Mathodu 13, Srirampura 12.6, Madadakere 20.8, Molakalmuru 11, B G Kere 4.2, Rampura 14.2, Devasamudra 22.4, Rayapura received 8 mm of rainfall.  More than 50 houses were damaged in the district due to heavy rain.  At some places, sheets laid on the top of the houses flew due to strong winds during the rains.

Arecanut and plantain crop have been damaged due to the winds at Kalaghatta and Lakkihalli.   Houses at Mallurahalli, Neralagunte and other areas of Challakere taluk also were damaged due to heavy rains.  Many low-lying areas in Chitradurga city were inundated. Apart from this, B D Road, Pune-Bangalore National Highway 4 were flooded. Consequently, traffic was disrupted for some time on Tuesday.

Besides, Nehru Nagar, Rajendra Nagar, Buddha Nagar, Kamanabhavi Extension and KHB colony at Kelagote were also inundated by the rain  water. 

As usual, drains were overflowing due to lack of proper desiltation. People at Kelagote staged a rasta-roko and urged the CMC authorities to clean the drains immediately. Later, the CMC officials cleared the drains.

MLA G H Thippa Reddy visited the rain-hit parts in Chitradurga and instructed officials to rectify their mistakes.

Meanwhile in Davangere district,  gale winds and heavy rain  damaged arecanut, coconut and other crops in over 14.15 hectares on Monday night.

Sources in the district administration estimated a loss of Rs 34 lakh due to the rain.

Gale winds uprooted plantain trees, areca trees and damaged coconut and other commercial crops.

As many as 45 houses  were partially damaged  in the district and a school compound was also damaged at Palya village. 

In Harihar taluk, four electric poles came down due to rains and power supply was badly hit.

The district received an average rainfall of 39.6 mm (Davanagere taluk-53.5, Harihar 28.9 mm, Channagiri 58,7, Jagalur 50,7, Harapanahalli 25.7 and Honnali 20.5 mm of rainfall). 

Loss details

Davanagere taluk: Plantain crop was damaged in 2.28 hectares and eight houses damaged partially; loss-`8.80 lakh

Channagiri: Three houses damaged, a school compound and a gokatte damaged; crop in 1.80 hectares damaged; loss `10.95 lakh Harihar taluk: crop loss in 10.04 hectares, eight houses damaged partially-loss `23.50 lakh.

Jagalur: 17 houses; Honnali: seven houses and at

Harapanahalli, two houses were damaged partially resulting in a loss of `2.60 lakh.
