The state government will ask the Central Bureau of Investigation to investigate the rape and murder of Soujanya, Home Minister K J George said here on Wednesday.

He told reporters that many NGOs, besides Soujanya’s parents, had found the findings of a CID inquiry unsatisfactory. A pre-university student of SDM College, Ujire, 17-year-old Soujanya was raped and murdered on October 9, 2012.

Protesters allege the CID implicated Santosh Rao and left out the names of influential people who were involved in the crime.

Veerendra Heggade, who runs the Dharmasthala religious organisation, has also sought a CBI inquiry to clear his family’s name. Protesters allege his nephew and three others were among those who raped and killed Soujanya, but the CID report cleared them.

Belthangady MLA Vasanth Bangera and Heggade had written to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah seeking a Central agency probe.
