Aadhaar-SIM Card Linking Project Soon

Express News Service

BANGALORE: The process of linking mobile phone SIM cards with Aadhaar numbers will begin within the next two months, a senior government official said on Thursday. The move will enable subscribers to use mobile-related services, including financial ones.

On the sidelines of the NASSCOM product conclave here on Thursday, R S Sharma, secretary to the Department of Electronics and IT, said users will be able to utilise their linked phone numbers for transactions.

The department is still mulling ways to make this work and has called upon several forums for expert inputs. The Prime Minister’s MyGov initiative is among those being tapped for ideas.

“Around 70 crore people have Aadhaar as of October and we are working to ensure that everyone has a card by the end of next year,” Sharma said. The mandate for the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) is to hit the 100-crore mark by December.
