BENGALURU: Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, in his speech on the occasion of the 69th Independence Day on Saturday, emphasised that his government was doing everything in its power to alleviate the problems of farmers.

The chief minister’s address focused on the rising number of farmer suicides. “The continuing farmer suicides has subdued my spirit to enjoy the celebrations. That these suicides have been taking place despite the sincere efforts of the government has pained me,” he said.

Siddaramaiah said that in the last two years, farmer suicides have been on the decline. “The problems of farmers being huge, cannot be addressed by the state alone. The Union government needs to lend a helping hand too,” he said. He also spoke about the schemes for farmers, including the scheme for organic farming Savayava Bhagya scheme.
