BENGALURU: University of Mysore Vice-Chancellor Prof K S Rangappa and six others were booked for misappropriation of funds in the Karnataka State Open University (KSOU).

The Justice Bhaktavatsala Commission, which had probed various irregularities related to construction of buildings, academic collaboration, opening of regional centres without proper permission, marks card scam, violations in formulations of statutes, ordinances and regulations and illegal absorption of guest lecturers, had indicted these six persons.

Deputy Commissioner of Police H T Shekhar said the cases have been booked under IPC sections 406 (criminal breach of trust), 409 (criminal breach of trust by public servant) and 149 (unlawful assembly). The action comes nearly a year after the Bhaktavatsala Commission submitted its report. Several protests and agitations spearheaded by then BJP MLC G Madhusudhana and Save Universities Forum president K S Shivaramu were held seeking action against the indicted men. Even the governor’s office had come under attack for delay in action against Rangappa.

Rangappa flies to US

Sources said that Rangappa had left for the US on Saturday to take part in AKKA convention and was expected back only on September 5. Though KSOU authorities had approached Jayalakshmipuram police to lodge the complaint on Friday, they were sent back by the police inspector Ravindra asking them to come on Saturday.
