Belagavi mayor and deputy get notices from Karnataka government

BELAGAVI: The state government has issued a show cause notice to Mayor Sarita Patil and her deputy Sanjay Shinde for participating in ‘Black Day’ rally instead of Karnataka Rajyotsava day programme.

The duo, who hold the constitutional positions, was the official invitees for the Rajyotsava programmes and also their names were mentioned in the invitation cards.  

Based on their reply to the notice and the government’s satisfaction with their response, a call will be taken whether to implement KMC Act 1994. According to the Act, the Mayor and the Deputy Mayor will be suspended for a duration of 1 to 3 months and the Deputy Commissioner will be appointed as the Administrator.

As many as 47 pro-Maharashtra miscreants involved in stone pelting, insulting and tearing apart Kannada flags during the Karnataka Rajyotsava celebrations on November 1 were arrested and remanded to the judicial custody.

Six people, including Ratnaprasad Pawar, who was arrested for carrying an airgun in the ‘Black Day’ rally, were arrested and remanded to the judicial custody on Thursday while the rest on Friday. On the day of the rally, Pawar, in a black outfit, rode a white horse with an airgun, shouting anti-state and pro-Maharashtra slogans.

Four were arrested from Market Police station limits and 37 people were from the Shahapur police station limits.

Police said they have identified 80 people involved in mischievous activities and are arresting them with solid proof based on the video and CCTV camera footage.

Meanwhile, former independent legislator Manohar Kinekar told Police Commissioner Krishna Bhat and Deputy Commissioner N Jayaram that the violence on the ‘Black Day’ rally was not intentional. He also pleaded that those who were arrested in connection to causing violence were innocents and must be freed.
