DAVANGERE:Two farmers ended their lives while a third farmer poisoned his wife and two children before killing himself in Davangere district. All three farmers had taken loans, which they were unable to repay due to crop loss.
Palakshi (32) of Belelgere village in Channagiri taluk, who was growing areca on his 1.5 acre land, had taken a loan. On Thursday night, he allegedly mixed poison in the food, which was consumed by his wife Shashikala (28) and two children Karthik (8) and Varshini (6).While police refused to comment on the motive behind the suicide, villagers also claimed there were some domestic issues.
Honnali taluk also reported two cases of farmer suicide. Mahantesh (35) of Odeyara Hattur consumed pesticide after he lost his entire maize crop grown due to drought. His borewell too had dried up. He had taken a loan of Rs 5 lakh. Seethanaik (53) of Suragondanakoppa village was found hanging from a tree on his farm after he lost his maize crop and was unable to repay loan.
