Absence of doctors, bed shortage caused infant’s death at hospital in Karnataka

KALABURAGI:A shocking incident of the death of an infant due to the alleged negligence of Kalaburagi District Government Hospital came to light on Thursday.

When progress review meeting of atrocity on women and children was under way by the Legislative Committee on Women and Children in the Deputy Commissioner’s office on Thursday, Guruswamy Hiremath who is the resident of Chennur village of Shahapur taluk, briefed the meeting about loss of his one-day-old male child due to the negligence of doctors.

He told the committee that he had admitted his wife Megha at Kalaburagi district government hospital on August 26. Due to shortage of beds, hospital authorities would make two pregnant women share a single bed. On the fateful day, no doctors attended to his wife and the baby from morning to 12 pm  on Saturday.
Guruswamy said that there was shortage of a life saving injection and also shortage of beds in neonatal incentive care unit. Two infants were sharing a single incubator, Guruswamy told the committee.
When the chairman of the committee V S Ugrappa wanted clarification from the district surgeon Dr Balachandra, he told the committee that two gynaecologists were present on that day. Ugrappa asked to hold an inquiry into the death.
