Silk farmer commits suicide in Karnataka

KOLAR: A silk farmer who was facing financial crisis due to the steep fall in the price of cocoons committed suicide by hanging himself today morning. The incident was reported from Mattla Halli, Kolar Taluk under Kolar Rural Police limits. Venkateshappa (55), a silk farmer, who owned four acres of land had to sell his crop at a very low price for Rs 300 in the market.

Villagers said, the farmer was depressed for the last three days as he had to repay huge amount of money to the bank and to the private money lenders. Following his suicide, scores of farmers group members staged a dharna demanding compensation for the farmer.'s family. Police have registered a case and are investigating.
