MYSURU: Puttachinammani, the mother of Pramoda Devi Wodeyar and a member of the Mysuru royal family, passed away on Friday, putting a halt to the Dasara celebrations in the city.

She was 98 years old and was suffering from illness for a long time. She had been admitted to hospital for the past few days.

As news of her demise broke out, celebrations for Vijayadashmi, Vajra Misti Kalahalla and other rituals were canceled. Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wodeyar, the scion of the Mysore royal family and adopted son of Pramoda Devi, removed the Kankana, a sacred thread tied during which time he cannot leave the palace during Dasara festivities.

Government organized functions, like the Jamboo Savari, will continue as per schedule as these are not held by the royal family. Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy condoled the death of the royal family member.

"May the mother goddess Chamundeshwari give all strength to Pramoda Devi and her family to bear the loss of the beloved," Kumaraswamy said in a statement while thanking the royal family for their co-operation in this year's celebrations.
