KOLLAM: The titanium sponge unit, a joint project of the KMML and the VSSC by using the DMRL (Defence Metallurgical Research Lab) technology, will be commissioned in September 2010.
Kerala Minerals and Metals Ltd (KMML) MD K S Sreenivas told a press conference here on Friday that with the commissioning of the titanium sponge unit the KMML would become one of the important industrial concerns on a global scale.
He said that the KMML would launch Zero Liquid Effluent Programme as part of its silver jubilee celebrations of its commissioning.
The company will construct a building, which include an airconditioned labour room and maternity care centre, for the Community Health Centre functioning near the company at a cost of Rs 50 lakh as part of discharging Corporate Social Responsibility, Sreenivas said.
It will also donate Rs 2 lakh to the Palliative Care Centre under the RCC and donate Rs 1.50 lakh to the Chavara Govt HSS under the Vidya Vikas project to buy furniture for the school. Jyothis, a project for installing 100 street lights from Sankaramangalam to Kannetti bridge, is the third project to be implemented as part of the silver jubilee celebrations, he said.
Industry Minister Elamaram Kareem will inaugurate the silver jubilee celebrations on December 16 at a function to be presided over by Water Resources Minister N K Premachandran.
The Industry Minister will also honour the employees who have completed 25 years of service.
Labour Minister P K Gurudasan will inaugurate the Zero Liquid Effluent Programme. Food Minister C Divakaran will inaugurate Vidya Vikas programme and N Peethambara Kurup MP will inaugurate the Jyothis programme.
Sreenivas said the profit of the KMML has increased despite global recession. This year the profit has increased to Rs 53.69 crore from last year’s Rs 46.74 crore.
The KMML could achieve this through diversification of products and by introducing cost-efficient methods, Sreenivas said.
The company has also initiated many projects to make it more profitable.
These include the Zircon Siliminate Project in the Mineral Separation at a cost of Rs 21 crore, modern boiler system, 20 MW power generation project and enhancement of capacity of synthetic rutile production, he said.
The KMML started titanium pigment production by using chloride technology for the first time in the country in 1984.
