It was one of the long-term demands of the self-financing nursing, pharmacy and BSc MLt college managements. They wanted to separate the admissions to BSc nursing, B Pharm, BPT and BSc MLT courses from the medical ranklist. The problem was that seats in these courses get filled only after filling seats in MBBS, BDS, BAMS, BHMS, BSc Agriculture and BSc Veterinary Science courses not necessarily in the same order of preference. As a result, many students who wanted admissions nursing and B Pharm courses go for admission in other States thinking that they would not get admissions to the courses here and also because they did not want to take a risk. Consequently, many seats were lying vacant in these courses. in some colleges, the number of seats lying vacant came to even upto 25 percent of the sanctioned strength. There was also complaints of a large number of vacant seats even in government nursing colleges. The Cabinet on Wednesday decided to do away with entrance examinations for admission to self-financing nursing colleges. the admissions to these courses will be held on the basis of Plustwo

marks. At present, admissions to these courses are held from the rank-list prepared by the Commissioner for entrance examinations on the basis of performance in the entrance examinations. Health minister P.K. Sreemathi last week during talks with managements assured them to consider doing away with the entrance examinations. The minister had assured them that new method will be considered in place of the present common entrance examinations for admissions to BSc nursing, B Pharm, BPt and BSc mLt courses. Later, the cabinet sub- committee discussed the issue and decided to make admissions on the basis of Plus two marks. The decision was ratified by the Cabinet on Wednesday. there were two options before the cabinet subcommittee either to make admission on the basis of Plus two marks or through a special allotment process as in the case of Bed admissions.
