KOZHIKODE: The Indian Institute of Management Kozhikode (IIMK) will organise an international workshop on ‘Greenstone’, the UNESCO’s open source digital library software on its campus from November 23 to 28.
The software aims to empower its users, especially in universities, public libraries, and other public service institutions to build their own digital libraries. The software is an internationally renowned software system promoted by the New Zealand digital library project research group at University of Waikato in New Zealand.Greenstone was developed and distributed in cooperation with UNESCO and Human Info NGO and it is open source software was issued under the terms of GNU General Public License.
The workshop will be inaugurated by IIM director Prof Debashish Chaterjee. Dr Ramarajan will deliver the keynote address. Around 30 participants from Nigeria, Srilanka and Pakistan as well as from the country will participate in the workshop. The participants are from the institutions including DRDO, AIIMS, RBI, universities, technology institutions, engineering colleges, and research institutions.
The workshop will be offered by a team led by the UNESCO coordinator of Greenstone Support of South Asia, Dr M G Sreekumar and the participants will be instructed in how to design different publications in various file formats including multimedia such as audio, video and images. They will also undertake assignments to design a small prototype of a library information system containing diverse type of material. All the participants will get the Greenstone Digital Library Software and instructional materials from the workshop.
The programme has been designed to facilitate the participants in creating state-of-art digital libraries using the latest version of the softwares, which include installation, configuration, customisation, digitalisation and other related operations.
